Home Office

Last year I started the project »Home Office«. The overall idea was to use graphic design for giving a critical and reflective view on the form of employment Home Office. It describes a special form of employment contract relevant in this day and age, which also affects the artistic fields. Home Office is a widespread phenomenon in society and work today. Many of my peers (friends, colleges) and I am confronted with this relatively new way to earn money. For some it has become a lifestyle in which they can thrive and can be enjoyed. It means that individuals work outside of their typical work state and conditions. They can manage working goals, appointments, intentions by phone, mail or other digital canals from home. The managment of personal relationships becomes more viable, as well as being physically present for relatives in need. Companies that offer Home Office are considered family friendly and faithful to their employees. This form of work has the benefits of always being available, while mixing free time and working hours. I believe that this specific type of employment contract is correlated to the digital revolution. However, the danger is a total appropriation of your work – work anytime, anywhere, and through any medium. I printed a print run of 50 lanyards and sold them online. The strap is printed with the word »Home« on one side and »Office« on the other. This should express the double-edged sword of the working method. It may be worn whichever way one chooses. The response was positive, many people bought a lanyard and sent me photos with their personal »Home Office« moment. For this reason I used lifestyle items and merchandising products to draw attention on this side effect of the digital revolution.

The Home Office (HO) is a ministerial department of Her Majesty's Government of the United Kingdom, responsible for immigration, security and law and order. As such it is responsible for the police, fire and rescue services, visas and immigration and the Security Service (MI5). It is also in charge of government policy on security-related issues such as drugs, counter-terrorism and ID cards. It was formerly responsible for Her Majesty's Prison Service and the National Probation Service, but these have been transferred to the Ministry of Justice. The Cabinet minister responsible for the department is the Home Secretary.

Tracked Stone

In this collaboration project I did together with Seojeong Yoon and Vincent Rheinberger we used a Google Chrome extension which gives you the opportunity to track the path of your mouse, while you surf through websites. It shows the route of your mouse in dotted lines. If the distance between the dots is bigger this means the mouse movement was faster. More narrow distance means that your mouse was slower. The idea was to bring the digital footprint onto a physical object. We decided to engrave the tracked lines on stone. Because stone is one of the oldest materials which were used as a medium for communication. We captured different movements on different websites and put the name of the website, date and time on the other side of the stone. Another intension was to translate something super impermanent like mouse movement on something definite like stone. You can not erase it, so it will stay there for a long time. We also showed the whole progress of creating the stone in a video link. The making of this shows too, the time-consuming engraving process of something super banal and reinforces the idea of putting something impermanent on something permanent.

Inherent Stress

I did the complete communication for Romin Walters exhibtion »Inherent Stress« at Kunstverein Wolfsburg 2017. This consits the exhibiton catalouge, floor plan and digital annunciation. The catalogue is not only designed for the exhibtion, it contains also older works from the artist. I tried to view both his acutal work as well as his earlier artworks to understand Romin Walters approach better. Romin Walter is working in spaces. He transforms abstract terms in technical objects. The created sculptures that he installs in spaces are up to enhance the elements with the help of kinetic functions out of their original meaning.

i'm lovin it

Dortmund ([ˈdɔɐ̯tmʊnt] (About this sound listen); Low German: Düörpm [ˈdyːœɐ̯pm̩]; Latin: Tremonia) is an independent city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is in the middle part of the state and is considered to be the administrative, commercial and cultural centre of the eastern Ruhr area. Its population of 581,612 (2015) makes it the 8th largest city in Germany. Moreover, Dortmund is the largest city by area and population in the Ruhr Area, an urban area with some 5.1 million (2011) inhabitants which is the largest urban agglomeration in Germany. Founded around 882,[2] Dortmund became an Imperial Free City. Throughout the 13th to 14th centuries, it was the "chief city" of the Rhine, Westphalia, the Netherlands Circle of the Hanseatic League. After the Thirty Years' War the city was destroyed and decreased in significance until the onset of industrialization. The city then became one of Germany's most important coal, steel and beer centres. Dortmund consequently was one of the most heavily bombed cities in Germany during World War II. The devastating bombing raids of the 12th March 1945 destroyed 98% of buildings in the inner city center. This bombing raids with more than 1,110 aircraft was a record to a single target in World war II.[3]

Every day, in the period from 24th April until 1st August 2015, I took a screenshot of a live webcam and peeked for a short time into unfamiliar worlds. The challenge the project posed was not only to accomplish a constant creative activity over 100 days; rather, it consisted in filtering out interesting cameras from the flood of public live webcams on the internet. Thus, the different ways of dealing with live cameras in different countries became apparent, as well as the type of material shown. I did not intend to create a series showing some sort of global overview of all public live webcams. My work is the reflection of a very personal perspective. The locations shown act mostly as places of longing, like most things happening within the frame of the live cams concern personal preferences or interests. I have sought to counteract the usually very short-termed and superficial attention live webcams experience and provide the extracted stills with more brilliance, quality and durability.

Sauna Talk – Studio Unfun, Peter Bankov

In beginning of 2017 I did the poster design for the lecture series »Sauna Talk« which is organized by Eike König. The lecture is named »Sauna Talk« because of the space where the lectures take place. This room is converted to a sauna room but without heat. This always creates a special atmosphere, because it´s cozy, intimate and always packed with many listeners. The selected speakers come from Graphic Design, Illustration or Fine Arts. For this lecture we invited the Nürnberg based studio Unfun and the Moscow and Prague based graphic designer Peter Bankov. Both designers are extremely different, this offered an interesting combination and created a informative discourse.
